The Truth About Baldness

You can't be a sister, daughter, wife or lover without the topic of baldness coming up in your life eventually.  Fact...we all have about 100,000 hairs residing on the scalp and normal people lose
anywhere from 50 to 100 hairs a day.  Males have a 60% chance of losing their hair, and it can start as young as the teenage years and nearly two out of every three men will begin balding by the time they're 60.  Most don't part with their part willingly—American males collectively spend $1 billion a year trying to hang onto those locks.  Some myths about baldness debunked:
Myth: Hair loss is passed down from your mother's side.
Not entirely true. While the primary baldness gene is on the X chromosome, which men get only from their mothers, other factors are also in play, like illness, age, genetics from both parents, and even primping habits like guys who tease their hair and use curling irons, which could speed up the process.
Myth: Exposure to the sun encourages balding.
Not true. FALSE.
Myth: Loading up on carbohydrates can lead to hair loss.
Carbohydrates and red meat actually provide nutrients that are helpful for maintaining a full head of hair, so eat cards and red meat because an iron deficiency has been linked to hair loss and taking iron supplements—could restore growth.
Myth: The most sexually active men are the first to go bald.
This is one of the most popular myths doctors hear from patients. Relax ,there's no truth to it.  Baldies have the same amount of testosterone than their hairy friends.
And in case you wondered, the three jobs with the most bald males are software engineers, web developers, and Salesmen.

Manly Men

We see signs all the time that manliness is a dying art with studies about how men can't do basic household repairs anymore, and trends like pantyhose and Brazilian waxes for men.  So here's some help to reclaim the manliness.  Planters nuts and "Men's Health" surveyed men and put together these lists of the top three manliest foods, sports, and drinks.  Check 'em out.
Manliest Foods.  Beef jerky was rated the manliest food, ahead of mixed nuts and then peanuts.
Manliest Sports.  Football is the manliest, followed by hockey, and then basketball.
Manliest Drinks.  Beer was rated the manliest, bourbon was second, rum and Coke was third.   Mai Tais with little umbrellas and a float of coconut Malibu rum were dead last.  Just kidding...kind of.

Cheating

Before you cheat on your taxes this weekend, know this:  It's a slippery slope to becoming evil.  A new survey found that people who cheat on their taxes are also more likely to lie on a resume, illegally claim unemployment, take credit for someone else's work, park in handicapped spots, AND believe they're more attractive and more important than other people . . . including their kids.
Think about THIS before you "forget" to report $15,000 in income this weekend.  Cheating on your taxes is a slippery slope toward being a completely ethics-free human being.
A new survey found that only 7% of Americans admit they cheat on their taxes . . . but the ones who do are more likely to cheat on everything else too.  Here are the things tax cheats are more likely to do than non-tax cheats:
Keep the wrong change from a cashier.
Pretend to like someone to get a free dinner.
Lie on their resume.
Work a job that's paid under the table while claiming unemployment.
Take credit for someone else's work.
Park in a handicapped spot.

Best & Worst Jobs

I remember in college learning that the average adult will have seven professions in a lifetime.  I found that interesting since they were usually really different.  In my own experience I can tell you that I have been a district manager for a big furniture company, a news reporter, clothing designer, etc.  What jobs have you had?  A list came out of the top 200 jobs and here is the top 10 BEST jobs, in order:  Software engineer, actuary, HR manager, dental hygienist, financial planner, audiologist, occupational therapist, online advertising manager, computer systems analyst, and mathematician.  In contrast, the 10 worst jobs on the list, in order, are:  Lumberjack, dairy farmer, enlisted soldier, oil rig worker, newspaper reporter, waiter/waitress, meter reader, dishwasher, butcher, and news broadcaster....which I have had four of, so funny!  Glad I ended up where I did with all of you.

The Perfect Man?

And now, a survey to make you feel completely inadequate.  A clothing company called Austin Reed surveyed 2,000 women to figure out the qualities that make up the "PERFECT MAN."  The list got really specific (and in my opinion a lot petty) but you can see how many of these 26 criteria you meet . . .

Physical.  Six feet tall.  Muscularly toned and athletic.  Brown eyes.  Short dark hair.  Smooth chest.  Clean shaven.  Good fashion sense, but gets ready in 17 minutes or less.  Wears jeans and a v-neck sweater.
Habits.  Non-smoker.  Prefers beer over wine or cocktails.  Admits when he looks at other women.  Eats meat.
Education, Career, Money.  College degree.  Earns more than you . . . approximately $76,000-a-year.  Drives an Audi.
Hobbies.  Loves shopping.  Watches football.  Can swim and ride a bike.  Knows how to change a tire.  Has a driver's license.  Likes dramas and reality shows.
Other Emotional Stuff.  Calls his mom twice a week.  Says "I love you" only when he means it.  Is sensitive when you're upset.  Has a good sense of humor.  Wants a family.

I have a lot of girlfriends and bounced this topic off of them and we agreed that a man wanting a shot of Pendelton over a glass of Pinot, taking 18+ minutes to get ready, and not wanting to watch trashy reality TV was A-O-K with us.  So prehaps perfection, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

Sweet News!

Once in a while, a some good news comes along and IT CHANGES YOU.  This news you can use is going to make you pull into the next 7-Eleven you pass to buy the king size Snickers bar you've been denying yourself for years.  Scientists at the University of California have proven that eating chocolate makes you skinnier.  They studied 1,018 healthy men and women who exercised an average of 3.6 times per week, and ate a balanced, nutritious diet.  Some of them ate a reasonable portion of chocolate five days a week, some didn't.  They found the people who consumed moderate amounts of chocolate five days a week had lower body mass index numbers than people who had chocolate less often.  How is this possible?  Well, the regular workouts helped.  The psychological effect of not depriving themselves of chocolate made it easier for them to keep the rest of their diet.  And chocolate DOES have a healthy side . . . cocoa!  Cocoa has antioxidants that improve your body's functioning, speed up your metabolism, and help your insulin sensitivity.  But the team behind the study has to give the disclaimer that this isn't a license to start eating family-size bags of M&M's after every meal (debbie downers).  It works best if you eat one ounce of dark chocolate or, at the most, one candy bar.

Picture This!

Eight hundred million people have helped me decide that Facebook, like pockets, is here to stay.  And the big changes to our profiles switching to Timeline puts an extra emphasis on pictures.  So, what kinds of snapshots do your FBBFF’s like?  Here’s a list of annoying facebook pictures:
Photos of food!  Unless you are a chef or own a restaurant no one cares what is for your lunch.
Holiday photos!  WHAT, you are decorating for Easter at your house this Sunday?  OMG, it is Easter at our house too!
Number three most annoying facebook photos are the ones that are supposed to look spontaneous but are obviously posed (we all know that girl, don't we?!)
Number two most annoying are baby photos.  Help us help you think your baby is cute by NOT showing us tons of photos to prove otherwise.  Too many shots make us have to be creative with things to comment and we have to resort to saying things like the kid looks like his parents...akward.
And the #1 most annoying type of facebook photo?  I call it “The Bulk” shot, it’s when people post an entire album with almost identical photos, look it is Becky and Barbara!  Oh, and Becky and Barbara smiling, and are here they are looking serious, Barbara and Becky with their arms around each other, so many pictures, so varied and so funny. I wish there were more pics!  NOT.  Or a dozen photos of the exact same garden, beach, park, or hillside from every angle.  So, for the sake of your friends, please cheeeeese responsibility.

What's my secret?

People always think I am much younger then I am, what's my secret?  Kiehl's.  Do you want healthier skin?  Portland is home to one of the purveyors of the finest skin care products, Kiehl's.  One hundred and sixty years ago, Kiehl's was founded as an old-world apothecary in New York's East Village neighborhood.  Their unique heritage represents a blend of cosmetic, pharmaceutical, herbal and medicinal knowledge developed and advanced through the generations, which in turn has helped make some very effective products.  If my friend Byron Beck hadn't walked me through the doors of the Portland location of Kiehl's on my 30th Birthday who knows what trouble my skin might be in.  From cleanser to shampoo and everything in between their products, though expensive, work.  I guess you really do get what you pay for.  Their latest and greatest product is a good weapon in the fight against dark spots and discoloration.  It is called Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution and is packed with Activated C, the latest-generation Vitamin C derivate available.  The clear jar that helps you to have clear skin will run you $49.50 and take about 6-8 weeks to see the results, but every drop is worth every penny.  Kiehl's is located on at 712 NW 23rd Ave. and can be reached at 503-223-7676.

Pour the Best

One hundred bottles of some of the best wine in the world are being opened this Saturday night at POUR.  “Not exactly a class,” owner Robert Charles Volz, told me, “but a chance to try some of the best wines, perfectly stored, aged to perfection in a fun, relaxed atmosphere with a Master Sommelier Candidate on hand to answer any questions you might have.”  In addition to the huge selection of “top-shelf” wines, they also will be pairing foods with them in the trendy Northeast Broadway hot spot.  They sent me the entire list of all one hundred wines, their year and their region but it is too much information to pass along to you…trust me.  I can ensure that whether you are looking to try a 1990 Dom Perignon or a 1985 French Bordeaux from Ch. Lynch-Bages Pauillac (or anything in between) you’ll find it Saturday night, March 24th at POUR, a neighborhood wine bar with a world class list.  POUR is located at 2755 NE Broadway, Portland, OR 97232.  You can RSVP to this event by emailing POUR@comcast.net or calling 503-267-2800, tickets are $100 and the event starts at 6pm.  Only 50 tickets will be sold and last I heard only ten spots remained, so hurry because life is too short to drink cheap wine.

Easiest Jobs on the Planet

If work stresses you out, chances are you don't have one of the THESE jobs.  Prepare to be jealous because some people are paid to…
Eat Chocolate.  The food tasters at Godiva can sample up to 50 bonbons a day, but it actually requires training.  And as you'd imagine, it's a hard job to get.  But food testers can earn up to $70,000 a year.  Think about all those housewives in the 70’s just giving their services away.
Watching Videos of Kittens.  Web editors at websites and casters at the animal planet spend hours combing through footage of kittens, puppies, and other baby animals .  I know some manly men who wouldn’t want that job but I don’t know anyone who would turn down this one…
Being a "Mansion-Sitter".  It's exactly what it sounds like:  House-sitting for rich people, very rich people with pools, stocked bars and 2000 thread count silk sheets.  Veteran house-sitters can make up $200 a week . . .plus they get free room and board.  With a good reputation and a turned up nose to partying, a “Mansion Sitter” can charge even more. It's usually just for a few weeks or a few months at a time, but you can apply to be a "mansion-sitter" on the website LuxuryHouseSitting.com.
